Licences for schools, universities and nonprofits

In short: For education, yes. Microsoft sells separate A-plans for faculty and students, and Office 365 A1 is free for eligible institutions. Office 365 A3 costs CHF 3.05 for faculty and CHF 2.35 for students, per user and month. Microsoft decides who is eligible. For nonprofits, ClearSource has no Swiss list price on record. (CHF list prices excl. VAT, as of 4 October 2026.)

From the Licensing FAQ, checked against its sources on 25 September 2026: Microsoft Education: Office 365 A1, A3 and A5 for Switzerland · Do schools, universities and nonprofits get their own Microsoft licences and prices?

Microsoft sells separate education licences (the A1, A3 and A5 plans, for faculty and for students) and has nonprofit offers. They are for organisations that Microsoft accepts as eligible, not for commercial customers. For education, Microsoft shows Swiss prices for some plans; for nonprofit offers ClearSource has no Swiss price on record and shows none.

What exists

Microsoft’s licensing list of 23 September 2026 holds 64 education licences and 2 nonprofit entries; ClearSource groups them by their names. The education licences include faculty and student versions of the A1, A3 and A5 plans, add-ons, and education-only products such as Minecraft Education.

8 education licences have a price on record (below). For the others ClearSource has none, so it shows none: nothing is estimated.

Who qualifies

Education: on its Swiss education page (read on 29 September 2026) Microsoft says that teachers and learners with an email address at an eligible educational institution can use Office 365 A1 free of charge, and that it provides Office 365 A1 for Education to eligible institutions at no cost.

Which institutions are eligible is Microsoft’s decision. ClearSource does not check it and cannot promise it: read Microsoft’s page and ask an IT partner to confirm before you order.

Nonprofits: ClearSource has no Swiss price and no confirmed Microsoft eligibility page for nonprofit offers on record, so it states no nonprofit price and no condition. Ask Microsoft or an IT partner what applies to your organisation.

Office 365 A1 costs nothing: Microsoft’s Swiss education page shows it as free, “donated by Microsoft”, for eligible institutions.

Microsoft’s Swiss page lists Office 365 A1, A3 and A5, not Microsoft 365 A3 or A5. Microsoft’s US page names the tiers converted here “Office 365 A3” and “Office 365 A5”, so treat converted figures as an indication and confirm the exact product and price in a quote.

These are Microsoft’s public list prices, not a quote: what you pay depends on your agreement and your IT partner.

How to buy

  1. Check on Microsoft’s education page that your institution can use the offer.
  2. Ask an IT partner that works with schools or nonprofits for a quote. Ask it to confirm eligibility, the exact licences and the price. ClearSource sells no licences.
  3. For a first budget, multiply the prices above by your headcount, and replace them with the quote.

The licence modeller prices commercial licences only. It has no education or nonprofit mode, because Microsoft shows Swiss prices for only some education plans and for no nonprofit offer.

IT partners that name these sectors

These IT partners list education or nonprofit among their sectors on their ClearSource profile. That is what they report about themselves: ask each one whether it supplies education or nonprofit licences.

ClearSource restates what Microsoft publishes. It does not decide eligibility, promise a discount or sell licences.
